Holiday Wedding Newsletter : The Wedding Cake Happy Holidays! Part II
December 2003
Dear Friend,

Happy Holidays !

It's so good to meet with you again. As you know, My Choice Weddings focuses on the "total you". So while we take Wedding Planning very seriously, we want to make sure that "you" are doing just fine. No doubt, you're running here, running there. Trying to fit everything into your already very busy lives. In the midst of all the excitement, you're being tugged in so many different directions. The good news is, it will all be over soon. Time passes so quickly and soon you'll be able to breathe again. Don't forget, however to find time for yourself. Stop and smell the roses, kick off your shoes, enjoy your family and friends and have a joyous holiday.

    Traditional vs. Modern Cake Designs

Traditionally, the wedding cake is usually a white round or square tiered or stacked cake with very elaborate white icing. Many wedding cakes are decorated with pastel iced flowers, real flowers, and/or decorated with a beautiful hand crafted, custom made cake topper. These days cakes are actually designed by highly trained "cake designers". The cakes are very elaborate and most cakes are something other than vanilla flavored. Buttercream and cheesecake are very popular - and so are the many variations of chocolate out there. In addition, many cakes are filled with fruits, custards and mousses. Yummy! The icing on wedding cakes can also be very different and creative. Many choose to have the icing coordinate with their wedding colors.

    Cake Display

The wedding cake should be displayed on its own table where it can be admired by all of the guests. (Make sure that it is displayed in a pretty area of the reception hall because you will have several pictures made near it.) Some brides choose to have the cake as the centerpiece for the buffet table, but I think that the cake should have its own table. Anyway, don't let the decor of the cake table slip. Make sure that the cake table has a tablecloth that matches the other tablecloths and that the cake is properly displayed on a silver cake base.

    The Grooms Cake
For years the Groom's cake served as a type of favor for guests. It was a dark fruitcake which was baked in advance, cut up into small squares, and put into little monogrammed boxes. The boxes were given to the guests to take home.

Today's cake often hints at some aspect of the Groom's personality. If the Groom loves to play golf, the cake may resemble a golf bag. If the Groom is a race car driver, the cake may resemble a race car etc, etc. In general, the Groom's cake is often a chocolate cake but may be the groom's favorite flavor. There is no limit to the design and there is nothing really traditional about it.

Who Should Design and Bake the Cake?

Here are some options to consider: - Your Caterer Or Reception Hall : : An Independent Off-Premise Baker : : Your Grocer's Bakery : : A Friend Or Family Member

    Questions To Ask Potential Bakers

    1. Can I see photos of previous wedding cakes you have designed? This is essential. If the baker won't show you photographs, look elsewhere.: : 2. Can I have a taste test? Many small bakers won't have samples on hand for you to taste. If your baker doesn't have any for you to taste at the time of your visit, ask if the baker will be hosting any "Cake Tastings" in the near future. : : 3. Do you charge extra for anything such as special fillings or icings, delivery, set-up, etc.? Extra charges for these items are pretty standard, but you need to know up front for the sake of your budget. : : 4. Will you decorate the cake with fresh or silk flowers or will you work with my florist? Unless the baker's floral decorating skills are excellent, ask your baker if your florist can handle silk or fresh flower decorations. : : 5. How far in advance will the cake be prepared? If the cake is being prepared well in advance and frozen, ask the baker how long it will take the cake to thaw. I have attended more than one wedding where the cake was still somewhat frozen.
